GET YOUR SONGS ON TV & FILM

Instructor: John Braheny, author of The Craft & Business of Songwriting, now in its 3rd edition.

There's a thriving market for both instrumental music and songs for audio/visual use and you can access it in a variety of ways. This class will explain the relative merits of pitching to music libraries, song placement companies, music publishers or directly to music supervisors as routes to audio visual media.  The class will answer important questions like these:
  • What's the role of the music supervisor and music editor in the selection process?
  • What kind of material works?
  • How is music used?
  • What constitutes broadcast quality?
  • How do you research the users?
  • What are the best tip sheets for Audio/visual projects worldwide?
  • What are the legal issues (including work-for-hire agreements with musicians and singers)?
  • What licenses are needed?
  • How do you prepare and present your music?
  • What can you earn and how do you get paid?
This class is especially for me if I...
  • have always wondered how to get my songs on shows like Grey's Anatomy or One Tree Hill
  • have always wondered if my songs were the right kind
  • want to know the legal and licensing considerations
  • want to hear a TV Music Supervisor's perspective on the kinds of songs they look for
  • have questions I'd like to ask the experts
You will have the opportunity to raise questions of your own, both to your esteemed teacher and his special guests who will include a hit tv show Music Supervisor.
Handouts for the class include:
  • Film//TV tip-sheet list,
